Ask if the fuel you buy is filtered at the pump and if the station has a policy on regularly replacing the pump filters. If you don't get a good response from management, better find another station.
Some stations don't have pump filters, making you more vulnerable to dirty gasoline. Other stations may sell adulterated fuel or worse, add water or kerosene for their fuel.
Most contaminants are denser than fuel - water, dust, rust, iron filings, sludge - and then separate from the fuel by sinking to the bottom of a storage tank. Personnel not following best practises can cause contaminants from a tank to mix with fuel.
Less frequented fuel stations operated by smaller brands are more likely to sell contaminated fuel. Apart from buying from big brands, busy outlets and company-owned fuel outlets, there are other ways users can protect themselves when it comes to contaminated fuel.
As a precaution:
- Always ask for a receipt and make a note of the receipt number to identify busy outlets .
- Fill a full tank at a time & no partial fill, so you can identify the fuel station responsible for the potential contamination.
If affected by contaminated fuel:
- Exchange details of the fuel station providing contamination with all other affected drivers.
- File your claim in writing at the fuel station headquarters and be sure to document everything to keep in paper.
