This is a reasonably serious load that hangs from the car key once it is started. The weight, together with the vehicle moving up and down repeatedly while driving, will wear down the cylinders within the ignition and eventually cause the switch to fail. To add years of service to your switch, buy a lightweight key holder that allows you to separate your key from the others. Drive only with the key in the ignition. If your vehicle key sticks while turning on the car, it is a warning that your switch is about to fail. Replace it before you get stranded on your drive.

General Motors, Toyota & Volkswagen had to recall various cars that had faulty starting keys.

One of the US News Shows put heavy key holders to the test. Reporter found that the more weight on the key holder, the more difficult it was to put the key into the ignition. Additionally, more overweight key chains have been found to eventually wear down the tumblers inside the ignition switch when a car travels over uneven, rough roads and hills, resulting in costly ignition repairs.
